Patterns in Motion
Patterns in Motion takes the Mamianqun—a traditional Chinese garment embodying Eastern aesthetics and craftsmanship—as its point of departure, focusing on the reconstruction of its cultural significance within a digital-intelligent context. The creative team selected 13 representative Mamianqun pieces and, using TouchDesigner-based digital imaging alongside generative artificial intelligence, deconstructed, recomposed, and regenerated their patterns. Within a four-channel CAVE immersive environment, the motifs are no longer bound to the fabric but are transformed into a dynamic audiovisual experience with spatiotemporal dimensions. The work explores a translational pathway from “object” to “image” in traditional dress, seeking a point of convergence between traditional aesthetics and contemporary technology, and inviting viewers to re-perceive and reimagine cultural memory.
